I have been out of the loop for a while so who is making good playing 24 fret guitars with a nice thin neck and possibly a trem at $1-2k?

Ibanez seems to all be made in Korea? No Japan? If they are good then whatever, but the Steve Vai carry handle is not going to happen.

Jackson...played a Soloist, not bad. I do kind of like that radius they use on the finger board.

Carvin looks really nice in the pictures, but anything can look good in a picture. I would like to be able to play it before paying for it. So sans a used one, they are out.

I love the Ibanez S470QS.. very nice and you should be able to find a new used one for less than a grand, which leaves a good bit of cash to drop some EMGs or Burstbuckers or Seymour Duncans in it.. very nice IMO...i miss mine.

Well..here's my opinion.

I have been playing guitar for 5+ years now.

I have an ESP f-100. 24 frets, plays amazingly. Bottom line really. I've played tons of other guitars, and just don't like them compared to my esp.

So there's my thought. Although you're price range is Way different than the esp.

Mine was $250. I replaced the pickups, which definitely helped the sound.

But there's my opinion.

Paul Reed Smith makes a variety of 24 fret models including their Custom and CE models. I have a Custom 24. Used to have a CE-24. Very nice, high quality guitars. Great necks. Some models should be well within your price range.

Thanks.
I played a used Phil Collen model today. I like the neck on that. It was like an unfinished neck that was sanded silky smooth. Very little drag.

I love Ibanez, been playing for close to 15 years and have owned and sold many guitars. I only use 24 fret models with fast necks and currently use and abuse an Ibanez Prestige (with EMG 81/85 pups), a JemBRMR (Dimarzio Breed pups)and a Universe UV777 (with 7 string Dimarzio Evolutions pups). Each one has a different feel that goes beyond the pickups. The Prestige actually has a thinner flatter neck than the Jem which feel a bit 'narrower' - both are excellent guitars though. My current favourite is the Universe, 7 strings, flat wide fretboard - 24 jumbo frets, extra distance from the lower horn and the neck to give true access to the 24th fret for lead (wide enough to sweep a double octave arpeggio - unlike most other guitars) and of course 7 strings. As far as 7 string guitar go the Universe knocks the pants off the EBMM Petrucci model which although it has an amazingly smooth neck lacks the playability of the UV. Another good thing about the UV is that the fret markers are nice and big rather than plain dot inlays which can make the transition from 6 string to 7 string a little more confusing. Each of the above comes with excellent workmanship and hardware - no faults at all.

Everybody.

But if you're looking for personal suggestions, I think that the USA built Jacksons are the best you can buy for that type of guitar.

Find and old Yamaha 12XX series guitar from the 80s. 24 frets, through neck, very thin neck, high end floyd rose. If the designation is 12XXA it is active electronics, if 12xxS it is passive. There is an RGX1220 and RGX1212 and another designation. The nice thing is you will pay under 500.00 usually for a 1500.00 dollar guitar.:D
I have an american Jackson that fits the description but the Yamahas I just mentioned smoke it.

Outlaws, check out the Ernie ball Music Man, John Petrucci model. Cool newer whammy bar that stays in tune with no locking nuts, 24 frets, split coil option on the humbuckers, very slim comfortable neck, beautiful finishes, the tuning pegs are the kind you stick the string in and cut it(no wrapping), Piezo pickup option. For sure check it out before buying anything else. Maybe its the one for you. I dont have one yet, but plan on finding a good deal on one eventually. I have played one at a Guitar Center that was a dream.

Depending on the options you choose you should be able to get one under $2k easily. the options are basic....they are piezo,paint/finish, matching headstock to body, neck inlays. Depending on which ones you choose will depend how much it costs.

Haven't played the specific model myself, but didn't Ibanez just come out with a 24-fret s-series model? Or is that the S470QS someone mentioned?

I just wrote a long post reviewing this axe but it dissapeared when I tried to upload it:-/ Basically the EBMM JP 7 string is not worth the money IMO. I own one and never play it anymore. The trem goes out of tune with whammy work, no top lock, no fine tuners - I had a guitar tech at a studio and a luthier look set it up on different occasions and both said that there will alwyas be tuning issues with the system. The neck feels amazing - very smooth, body has a nice shape and feel. Pickups are strange. Ultra silent at high volume and high gain - no hums or noise whatsoever, also very tight and boomy for rhythm but completely lacks balls for lead IMO. The piezo is a nice touch but my Ibanez Universe is leagues ahead in playability and flexability. The neck sells the guitar but with time the novelty wears off and the tone and trem problems tip the scales against it. Mine will be on Ebay this weekend.

bummer it doesn't work for you. I mean no offense but, I take exception with most of your negative comments regarding the EBJPM. I would say that the guitar has a slightly darker tone due to the PUPs but a dab of EQ puts it right where I like it. As for the hardware and intonation, I've had excatly the opposite experience. I've found it to be very stable.

Again, no offense intended but rather a balanced counter point of view and experience. I'm a firm believer of the old "to each their own" and one man's trash is another man's treasure.

An alternate instrument consideration...Peavey Wolfgangs. The pups sound great and the neck while not a flat thin style like the JPM or Ibanez RG's, the compound curve makes it very comfy.

i have a jackson PS-2 which i believe was made in korea, and it has one of the slimmest, fastest, necks i've ever played

i don't even want to know what the american jacksons feel like, because i'd probably have to go drop a big chunk of coin on one
