Do you ever find yourself dealing with the following problem: having clicked on record, the program suddenly freezes, so that you've recorded about half a second of sound, and nothing else?

Possibly hundreds of dollars rides on your answer.

What kind of system are you using, and most importantly, how much RAM do you have? Does it freeze your whole computer, or do you regain control in a second or two afterwards?

I used to have a problem similar to that plus MANY more when running n-Track on Win98. Moved to NT and 95% of my problems disappeared. The author even states in the FAQ that it runs better in NT which I'm guessing is his development platform.

It might be worth the bump dobro. n-Track will still crash from time to time but it won't knock out your OS.

You're using Win98 Lite aren't you? Perhaps I'm confusing you with someone else (which wouldn't be unheard of considering my lack of medium-term memory

Slack: Nope, Windows 98. I thought this might be my SW (Cool Edit), but after trawling through the forums, I think it's time for a long-avoided Windows 98 re-installation.

As long as you're going to invest the time to do a reinstall of Win 98, invest in at least
32 MB more memory! 64MB is rock bottom for multitracking in Win 98. 128MB is more like it. And that's why the high-dollar multitracking SW is more money. It doesn't crash, saving you the time to get on with recording instead of constantly rebooting.

Dear Doctor

I appreciate the good sense of what you're saying, but at this point I'm just hanging on and keeping things at bay - this project I'm working on now requires two tracks per cut only (not exactly track-intensive, is it?) and as soon as it gets done, this computer's grass for recording purposes. I'd rather put the money toward a ribbon mic or the next computer, which will have RAM like shooters to the stars, plus a hard disk you could park Manhattan Island on. I want a band, too.

n-Track doesn't crash on NT. Every once in a blue moon sure, but then you don't have to reboot the machine, you just restart n-Track.

$35 for n-Track. $120 for NT (OEM). Sure beats the piss out of spending $500-1000 on the "good" stuff. Or pirating the good stuff.
