Fade an effect

I'm a new cubase SX3 user and wanted to know if there was an easy way to gradually fade an effect on a track? Basically what i want to do is have a sort of flange/phaser effect on the guitar intro that fades out as the rest of the instruments start playing.

write automation on the send, or automate the level of the return

Unless you have the flange/phaser on as an insert, in which case automate the wet/dry control.
