I want to nuture my son's interest in music and want to find out the basics regarding start up equipment just to see if this is something he may want to pursue. I would greatly appreciate any info...I am completely unaware of what is available for home recording. Basically, is there any little gizmos out there, fairly affordable and easy to learn? He is 16 and his musical tastes are...uhhh, completely opposite of mine. I don't even know what they call it but sometimes it faintly resembles what I know as "rap" but with some pretty heavy metal thrown in?? I guess that doesn't matter, really. ANyway, thank you to anyone who points me in the right direction.

Does your son play any instrument?

"If you have a computer at home and he likes the rap thing, You might want to check out :D the program called ejay (make your own music in minutes) fun toy to play with... :D :D :D plus it has the virtual turntables...."

And there are milion Gizmos out there so be carefull

Is he looking to do DJ kind of recording, recording his own music?
Are you looking for recording software or hardware?

If your near civilization, you might want to go to a guitar/keyboard store in your area and check out the software and hardware they have.
There are lots of online sites to buy from also.

You might try, for software,
http://www.sonicfoundry.com/
http://cakewalk.com/

That'll give ya an idea.

Some is pricey, some not as good as others. Look those sites over and then come back and ask what the users thing about them. You'll get straight answers from the people here.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, my son plays a bass guitar. I will check out the ejay thing as that sounds like a quick start..also the websites mentioned. I will research and come back with my questions...great idea!!!

I'll be Bach!!! ( a little music humor..i guess)

That ejay thing was a bit of a joke, but it shouldn't be very expensive program so he could try few things with that one...

I just had fun playing with it.... My friend got it with his headphones.

But if your more serious about the homerecording thing ejay is not your solution.;) http://www.ejay.com/

Is your son good with computers ?

Also does he have a bass amp ?

If the answer to the first is yes and the second is no, then maybe the way to go would be to get a Line6 Bass Pod, which is basically a gizmo which can take the signal from the bass and process it so it sounds somewhat like you are playing through a choice of classic bass amps. The sound can be then put into headphones, speakers or a recording device.

I suggest that if there is a PC available, that that would be the best thing to use as a recording device. With an inexpensive peice of software such as n-tracks ($50 www.fasoft.com I think) you could get decent bass sounds recorded in conjuntion with the Pod.

A free demo of something like Fruity Loops to make beats to go with his basslines, and you have months of fun and learning. And you haven't spent too much if he decides he's not really into it after all and he just wants to play his bass.

Bear in mind that recording has too be something that you love to really spend the time to get any good at it. There is a frightening amount to learn, mostly the hard way, before you get anywhere near 'pro' quality recordings.

IMHO though, learning about digital mutitracking young is a great idea for anybody interested in music.

pAp.

I agree with PapillonIrl Bass Pod or a Johnson j-station could be nice gizmo in that case. And fruity loops and n-track are far advanced programs that the ejay piece of toy I brought up...

And in case he is learning the hard way you must teach him to use this forum... there lot of guys who fill help

:D

also

Also, if he has interest in recording and audio engineering, a 4-track tape deck might be fun for him. I'm sure you can get one pretty cheap, either new or from ebay.
