I have just purchased a recorder and I need to buy a phantom power supply that will wupply power to up to 8 microphones. Are some better than others? What should I consider other than the price when looking at these?

the best advice is to try 'em out. I have 4 condensor mics that all require phantom power & I use them with my Alesis mixer, which is very quiet. I loaned a couple to my playing partner who has an old relic mixer w/o p.p: we used a rolls (2-mic) box to hook them up and it was pretty noisy. Of course, noisy in the context of digital recording -- live it doesn't matter so much , unless it's in an obnoxious frequency range. So I would say, listen to them. Most headphones have a hi freq boost so if you try them through headphones you'll probably get a worst-case test. I have seen multi-mic p.p. boxes but don't see any for sale (in my particular assortment of catalogs) right now. Check out the mic manufacturers' web sites and they generally feature accessories for their gear. Of course, make sure they operate at the voltage your mic uses -- but they seem to be getting standardized now. I don't know what prices run but an Alesis studio 12R (with 8 p.p. XLR inputs) can be had for $350 new. This might give you some extra flexibility.
good luck
John
