Do any of you guys think that an extern preamp would be needed for the boss br 1600 - I'm looking for getting good vocals and acoustic guitar sounds, so i'm wondering if it's gonna make any big difference - Anyone ? What are your experiences?

Not required, but it may give you more versatility in getting the sound you're looking for.

Just plug in a decent condenser mic in turn on the phantom power and try some of the vocal sounds and you'll be impressed ! This thing comes loaded with great sounds for voice and guitars (electric and acoustic) and insert and mixdown effects.

I have an 1180. I can tell you with absolute certainty that when I started using a DMP3 pre plugged into the guitar insert I started getting better quality than I did when used the internal pre's and phantom power using the XLR mic input. The sound has a better range, it sounds fuller, and crisper. I have many recordings with the internals and I would say they are completely useable, better than the pre's on my Mackie DFX12, but a decent dedicated pre will outperform the internals on the Boss units. But that's just my opinion.

I agree, however the pre-amps on the Boss BR1600CDR unit are quite sweet sounding for a DAW! :)

I don't know if the pre's on the 1180 and 1600 are the same?

If you want to be really fancy about it you could use a preamp with a digital S/PDIF out and come into the BR 1600 via the S/PDIF in. That way you'd be getting external preamplification and a/d conversion and you'd be completely bypassing Roland's preamps.
