Hi guys, can anyone tell me what difference plugging extension speakers into an amp makes, does it make the amp handle more volume?does it alter the tone,or does it just give you sound coming from a different direction, would be thankfull for an answer ,Ian

External speakers (extention cabs) are just what the name implies, external or more simply extra speakers. They will likely have a different sound than the original speaker, different brands have different tonal qualities. Larger speakers may give you more definition on bass notes and may seem louder. You wont really get much if any actual increase in volume, but larger speakers move more air and project the sound a bit more and this makes them seem louder. If you have a mono amp you will be getting basically the same sound from both speakers with a slight difference in tone. If your amp is a stereo chorus you should notice a difference in the sound from each cab. Don't confuse chorus with stereo chorus, they are very different in both function and sound. The main thing to concern yourself with when conecting an external speaker cab is to match the impedance. If the output jack says 8 ohm then make sure the cab is 8 ohm also. You also want to use an ext. cab which is capable of handling at least 1/3 more power (watts) than your amp's peak output. Many amps will automatically disconect their primary speaker when you conect an external speaker, not all but this is a common feature on many small combo amps. You might want to go to the amp manufactorer's website and see if they reccomend or make an external cab for your amp, not that that would be what you want, but it will give you a good idea of what to look for, what they suggest should give you an idea of what your amp is capable of or what it is limited too. Hope some of this helps.

Take your amp to guitar center and plug into a 412 cab and see for yourself.
