i played one today. not bad at all, especially for the money. decent balance of frequencies, not harsh at all, no farting (with valve junior head), and about the same quality as the valve junior. i'd say it's a no brainer for the price. don't expect that elastic magic or sweet breakup that some speakers do though. it did have a tad of resonance that i wasn't crazy about but nothing severe. still a no brainer.
pretty darn good when paired with
the valve junior head, which i would rate similarly. as far as new manufactured amps go in that price range ($260 for both head and cab), you can't beat it. respectable rock n roll tone on a low budget. i played the epi custom blues 30 watt 212 too and it's also not bad. thicker sound than the valve junior and cab but in the same ball park tone wise. these amps kick the shit out of the modeler stuff except maybe
the vox ad50vt, which is in the same price range. i would tend to go for the epiphones though because they will be serviceable when something goes wrong. that little vox might serve well to go back and forth from bedroom practice (low volume) to rehearsal (loud enough to jam with a drummer) but i've read about quite a few issues with reliablity. too bad because it sounds pretty good with the right settings. i checked out a peavey valve king 112 combo too. what a piece of trash! the valve junior walks all over it. none of these amps have that 'magic' but all of them (excluding the valve king) sound very decent and i wouldn't have any hang ups owning one. i was surprised by the vox considering that it's a modeler. it responded well to guitar and pickup changes. the valve junior surprised me with it's volume and gain when dimed. every rock n roller should have one in the house. it's loud but not loud enough to keep up with most drummers i would think. probably perfect for getting a cranked rock sound at home for recording. also, a high quality (old school) preamp tube might grease up the epiphones a bit. don't expect tweed deluxe though!
this might not apply to you metalheads! you guys suck any way! (except metalhead himself of course)
