I hate to break it to you guys, but every Gibson guitar costs less than $400 to make. Of course, Gibson is not the only company that overprices it's instruments. Here's the philosophy: if the price is high, the consumer will think they are getting something excellent. Just about every guitar made by the most of the big companies since, say, 1985 is massively overpriced and of mediocre quality. I'm not saying Gibson guitars are bad guitars, they're just massively overpriced. Hamer, on the other hand, is a company that can justify their high prices. If you have any doubts, feel free to check out these articles.

Ed Roman isn't the most credible refernce to be using. LOL He has somewhat of a reputation. ;)

You are so full of shit I can smell it from here.

Either that or you are the King of the Trolls.

Which is it?

Once again you start laying down statements you cannot substantiate. Please give me a business breakdown of the costs of making a high end guitar Gibson or any other you would like to choose and then balance it against the business costs. Then we can talk.

You are a freaking gooftard. If you really can't feel and hear the difference between a Gibson and a freaking Hamer, then you should stop typing alltogether.

Absolutely! Just check some of the shady things Ed Roman has pulled on customers---------an example from Harmony Central--

Product: Ed Roman Terminator
Price Paid: US $3000+
Submitted 08/03/2005 at 10:14pm by Dick Trickle

Features : 1
Gibson Les Paul Retop and Customize. This has completely new top and fingerboard and electronics and hardware. Poor workmanship... I actually sent it to Gibson Custom Shop to fix... and they showed me the all the "Hand Built" inperfections and flaws. Which impacted my playing, let alone, the technical stuff others point out. But, a BIG BUT: They kept changing the pricing and such and then said it was on his site! DO NOT SEND HIM YOUR GUITAR! IF YOU DO, YOU BETTER HAVE A COMPLETE QUOTE (COST) BEFORE YOU DO!!!

Sound : 1
The intonation was out of balance, I run through, 4 different Marshalls, Fender Pro Sonic, and a Ampeg custom. I run a Eventide 3000SE/D and a ton of foot pedals. I play rock and all diversities of it. Man, these clowns thing they know what sound is on an LP. NOT! Ed was pushing his special pickups and bad mouth all the ones he doesn't sell. BTW, after talking to many people, Ed Roman used to bad mouth alot of the pickups he Now Sells! Total Hippocrit!!! Only If I knew ahead of being suckered into send him money.

Sounds like Shit to my Gibson 59RI with Burstbucker Pros #2 & #3s.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 1
Frigin morons cut the Fret wires wrong and it is uneven! When I called to Ed about it... he said it left here in perfect condition and that it must of been damaged in shipment. Told me to file a claim... Jesus, does this guy thinks guitar players and people, plus local luthiers are idiots? It was a direct workmenship flaw!

Reliability/Durability : 1
I'm not going to play it anymore, so it's a zero! Totally Disgusted for the amount time I waited for it and the price.

Customer Support : 1
It's going into the Fireplace after a good bottle of Jack with the Band and Friends... might as well, dealing with Ed Roman and the Drones that work for him are worthless!!! BTW, After reading all the reveiws on all the Roman models, I noticed what one other person pointed out... Ed must have his "Boys" posted great reveiws, because it does sound so much like their attitude and desparation for business and good reviews. All I can say... read all the reveiws and inquire into it... or just ask other guitar makers about this Primadona and his BS I bought into. After calling and complaining on this POS he sent to me... he basically just insulted me and if I sent it back he would look at it, and if he deemed it was alright, I would have to pay for the shipping back too! What An A-Hole!!!

Overall Rating : 1
Call every other guitar luthier and manufacturer about ROMAN. Ask at your local stores, search the internet, ask people at NAMM, call the BBB, and get educated by what this guy is about. I am really suprised after all the bad reviews I've read, he's not in jail! Some people are pure Teflon!

And by the way-those Ibanez Destroyers were great guitars-a friend had one many years ago and I loved the feel of it.:D

Yup 3 DiMarzio humbuckers.

I had to oppurtunity to pick one up a few years ago for cheap... missed out... oh well... the price they go for now generally leaves me out..
I have a limit - if it is not in the country already then $1000 AUD incl postage (about $850 US)...
Any more than that and I have to pay a customs fee and 10% tax on the whole lot.
Yuck

What are they going for these days? I haven't looked into the value for about 10 years. Funny 10 years ago I wouldn't have gotten $200 for it on a good day. Ya know the whole pointy guitars aren't cool anymore thing.

Depends on if they have a hard case or not.. they can go around the $500 or so mark even higher these days.. an X series recently went for $730....

Quick easy answer to the original post. ESP Explorer style with EMG 81's. Rock star all the way, cheaper than an old Gibson, and a really good guitar to boot. Carry on.....

You mean a gibson lawsuit model or the new one's? the new one's are a bit.. well.. dangerous looking ;) I mean.. self infliected amnd to fellow band members.

The old ESP explorers... I am looking at an LTD model at the moment, still a bit rare around here but I get to play it Thursday... :D

That's just the sort of responsibility you take on when you want to look cool. I can't tell you how many bass players I've impaled with the back end of a BC Rich Warlock. At first the bass players are pissed. But if you give them some gum, they seem to mellow out pretty quick.

DEAN

Dean Z, a cheapo or one more expensive... I've liked that one of mine, that Ibanez is standing in the corner as a scratchingboard for cats 'cause I LOATH froyd-lose-kinda bridges.
But Deans have served me well....

AND... there's nothing so rockstar-ish as that headstock!!!!!!

First law: Dont piss off the bass player. His guitar is heavier than yours and has longer reach! :D:p

I personally hate Dean headstocks. Nothing screams cheese like a Dean.
