explorer.exe running high?

What would cause this? I'm running firefox and trillian and expolere.exe sometmies peaks over 220k. So my computer freezes. What can cause this? I know their are only 3-4 app processes running. I always scan for spyware.
 
Any ideas? This is really pissing me off. I can barely run word and the text and really sketchy so it takes me twice as long. I could be a virus but I'm not sure of any good free anti-virus programs. What else could cause this?
 
My first guess would be malware. If you are running WinXP Pro (don't know if this feature is available with WinXP Home) you can do a system restore to an earlier date. I just got rid of some spyware that my bonehead daughter denies downloading that way.

Start... programs... accessories... system tools... system restore.
 
umm last time i had trillian it used up a TON of resources.
