Expanders

Probably a dumb question but what exactly do expanders do?

Also, totally unrelated, but can anyone tell me why I was unable to log on under my old user name? I had to sign on all over again as a new user. I kept getting a message that my account may have been disabled. Anyone know why they do this? Thanks!

Expanders do the opposite of compressors. They expand the dynamic range. The reason they're not so popular is that they're generally used in an attempt to "fix" over-compression, but in order to do that you need to be able to sneak the expander settings between the lower volume ranges and the higher volume ranges in order to spread them apart, and that's usually not possible, because they're strangely enough... over-compressed.

Don't know a thing about the log-on problem.
