The before decoding sounds better. The after decoding sounds strange and off balance.

They both sound pretty good the second one is a bit more up front with the cymbals.

what mic's where used? the cymbals sound good

I thought the same thing. I have a different way of decoding that sounds more natural to me. A friend was just showing me his technique so we grabbed the closest mics, which in this case was a Peluso 22 251 in fig 8 and an ATM-4033.

The second one is much better. You dont really notice how one-dimensional the first one is until you play the second one and then immediately go back to the first one.....

I love mid-side setups, especially on acoustic guitar.

Probably won't be "new" to any of you. This method was something I've read about before but hadn't tried yet. I posted the clip to see if others thought it sounded "unnatural".

It's the method where you copy the fig 8 file, flip it and phase reverse it. Group those two channels, panned hard left and hard right, and slowly bring the faders up until you hear the amount of depth you want.

I prefer my method, but it's good to know other ways of doing things.

that sounds like a crazy method to me...but to each his own..

I've always brought the center channel up last to bring out the depth...

when you copy the side, flip the phase, do you bring the copied side's fader up until it's at it's most inaudible?...it sounds like you are just copying, flipping the phase, and hard panning

Yup, that's what he showed me. Weird. So maybe tonight when I get home I'll revisit the sound files and see if I can figure out the phase issues. Thanks for helping me sort this out. Cheers, Rez

with your left channel at unity gain (0), and the right channel's fader all the way down, and flipped out of phase, slowly bring up the right channel's fader until the two channels cancel each other out as best as possible...flip right channel back in phase...bring up center channel till the recording has depth and presence.
