Hello all,

I just finished an album in Cubase 4. I did al the mixing/mastering myself, but I am curious to what I could do to get things a little brighter without making them harsher. I feel like I got some decent low end, but on my next project, I want more sparkle.

I basically layered way too much and then just started cutting things until I ended up with the mixes I have. It was really just a fun experiment, but now I just want to do something simple!

You can preview all the lo fi mp3's at this link:
http://www.delvinshademusic.com

And click on The Realside. It is the first cd there, Willett Comb.

I used Voxengo Elephant 2, Voxengo Soniformer and occasionally some EQ to boost between the 2k-5k range if it was a bit dark.

Any ideas?

Thanks as always,
Terry McClain

Never really listened to Sixpence and I don't use Waves.

I may have however crushed it too much in the mastering process, but I was trying to get at commercial levels.

What kind of music DO you like and/or listen to?

wow

Not trying to threadjack, but Doulos...nice list:D. Lot's of my fav's on there.

Well, I'll give you props for your frankness. I went to your site and I understand now about your criticisms. I may have to remaster the album for audiophiles, as I was just trying to keep up with "industry" standards. All this and I realize... "Where and what is this industry anyways?!?!"

I'll keep it in mind for my next album which is mostly folk based without the electronics. I hope the loudness wars end too, but I'm a songwriter first, engineer...uh...about 152nd.

Thanks,
Terry McClain

Maybe, but never forget that no matter how much the rude guy knows; he's still an arse.

There's just no need for it! :D

I don't mind rudeness. Honestly, when you have done this for a long time (I'm going on 17 years) you meet a lot of critics along the way that try and tear you down. I take what I can out of it as someone's opinion. If someone can make you quit playing music by something they have said, no matter how critical, then you probably don't have it in you anyways. I got the treatment from the hardcore theory-heads when I attempted music in college. I'm a street musician, as I have learned my skills by playing with as many musicians as possible, rather than study texts.

People who lash out at other types of music are only filling a void that exists within themselves. I find all music has artistic merit, so long as it lifts the spirit of just one person- even if that one person is the creator.

I would rather have someone tell me they dislike something and why, rather than to lie and just tell me it's great. That is how I get better as a musician. And btw, Sixpence does have some nice tunes (they remiond me of a Nashville fav- Fleming & John), but I found it funny that P.O.D. was in that list, because their tunes are loud as well.

Ah well, to each their own. Thanks again, everyone. Hopefully we'll get some more biters here. C'mon, give me your best shot, you cannot break me.

So do pro engineers peruse this site at all and offer their critiques or all we all indies doing so?!?

I think it's pretty amazing what you can do at home compared to like 15 years ago.

Then again, we all cannot afford 2" tape.
