... my budget is too low.

If that's the case, how much do I have to spend to get really good sounds?

I know that 'good' is very subjective, but I'm pretty picky about the 'realness' of the sound.

Anyone?

I LOVE MY GEAR!
So far I have:
Mounted my rack.
Entered my computer.
Banged my drums.
Stroked my guitars.
Pounded my pedals.
Twiddled my knobs.
Diddled my compressors.
Slapped my delay.
And Vexxed my Lex(icon)!
If you love your gear it will be good to you.
Gear On!

Realness -

String bass sounds like a real string bass.

Piano sounds like a piano - sustained notes decay with all those overtones jumbling together like they do.

Slap bass - you can hear the thumb hitting the string hitting the frets.

Drums sound like a real stick hitting a real drum skin.

I'm particularly partial to being able to hear the sound of the stick hitting the bell on a ride cymbal.
etc.

... but Tim, have you:

Didgereed your didgeredoo
Slid up your resonator
effed the ineffable, and
screwed the inscrutable?

I love my gear. And you wouldn't be able to get one natural sound out of it even at gunpoint! :)

buy a sampler

A sampler will give you alot of configuration aswell as non-specific/non-directed set of sounds, so you can have whatever you want in there rather then be stuck with a pcm preset sound module (very limited) altho with a synthesizer you can develope your own sounds, that is if you understand synthesis well enough to do so...
