Ever track drums with no "click track" but...

just having the drummer listen to a metronome in his headphones? and then tracking the other instruments over that rather than making a dedicated track for a click?

ofcourse im assuming that you made sure the track was a good take and theres no noticible timing issues before overdubbing.

Yes. The only reason I print the click is when there are stops and pauses in the song, or when the song starts with the guitar doing a few bars. That way, everyone knows when to start and when to come back in.

If the song starts with the drums playing and just goes straight through, I will only print the 8 count at the beginning so the drummer doesn't have to count it off. (and I don't have to edit it out)

Yeah, if I do track a click, I usually get rid of it or at least mute the playback of after anything else with pulse gets tracked.

Depends on the instrumentation and with what the artists are comfortable too.

Good to have an open mind and do what works for the talent and promotes the producers vision/goals.

Farview has a really good point to to use it to lock in and then from there whatever is needed/works.
