I'm in the market for a pair of powered monitors (or monitors and a power amp) for under $500. I found the Event ps5's for around $400. The question is, has anyone out there used them? Are they any good? I'm a newbie to recording and mixing, but I've read some other reviews of more expensive monitors that are certainly better than the PS5's, but are far beyond my budget. Are the PS5's significantly better than using headphones or just mixing through my stereo?
Please excuse my naivete', and thanks in advance for any help.

You're better off to go for the PS6's - better low-end response and smoother highs. Very much worth the difference in price.

What really counts though is your ears - not someone else's opinion - try both - then decide....

I have got a set of Event's Tria powered speakers, and I love 'em. The set contains two nearfield monitors and a seperate sub unit that also houses the amplifiers. The highs and lows are adjustable for each speaker, as well as the sub. The best part is it only cost $450 from http://www.8thstreet.com
Bruce is right though, so don't buy anything unless you hear them first.
