Event ALP5 or Rokit RP5

Hi, I've read the various threads about cheap monitors but my situation is complicated by the fact that not only is my budget limited but I live in Australia where recording equipment is way overpriced.

So bearing that in mind...I've recently discovered that the Event TR5 is discontinued and the replacement which is the same price is fully made in China. I'm not sure if that is good or bad. Anyhoo...

The ALP5 and the Rokit RP5 are within my Australian budget. The price of these in the US of A is about $300 a pair. However in Australia the cheapest I can get the RP5 is about AUD$575 (or shipped from the states for AUD$440) but I can get the ALP5 for $480

Also being moderately considered is the Behringer 2030A which is USD$280 in the US and AUD$480 here. But I don't think anyone would recommend them over the Rokits?

I can't affort the TR6.

So my basic question is which one of these two would you choose if they were given as a present for you to use... The Event ALP5 or the Rokit RP5

I own and recommend the RP5's.

They are, IMHO, the best sounding small speakers out there at the moment.

If there's availability in the land of Oz, you might want to check out the Wharfedale DP8.2's which in my opinion (again) are the only other monitor in the price range that comes close.

Gallet, I haven't heard either of the monitors you mention although the new Events seem worth a listen. They're so new that I haven't seen much written about them, and I read a lot. Here are a few user reviews that I googled:

Whichever monitor you choose, I'd suggest that you plan on picking up a sub at some point in the future when the budget allows. Because of my limited space, I use 5" monitors, too, but I always had trouble mixing the low end--until I added a small sub. What a difference. I do like the small 2.1 approach, though, in my space-deprived studio.

Good luck,
J.

Yeah that was one of the reviews I read. I will be thinking of a sub in the future. However a new element has just been thrown into the mix. I might be able to get a pair of shop floor demo KRK V4's that are in excellent condition for only a little more than the ALP5, what do you think? Would they be a lot better.

Sorry, but I've given up recommending specific monitors, especially those that I haven't actually used. Tastes differ too much. By the way, I don't know if you have access to the new 5" Tascam monitors (under $300/pair), but I just read my second pro review of them--both raves, stronger than the typical. If I were in the market now, I'd definitely add them to my audition list.

Ouch. International prices are always interesting: the Tascams are actually cheaper than the ALPs in the USA. Oh well.

Actually a little more research has got the tascam's down to a normal price. Their street price range in Australia is from $500 to $900.

Anyway it looks like the V4 are only series one so they are a bit overpriced.

That means I'm back down to choosing between the ALP5's or the RP5's, but the VLX5's are back in the ball park now, what do you think of them compared to the RP5's?

If you have any access to recording mags, I think the two Tascam raves were in a recent "Tape Op" and the current "EQ". Both reviewers seemed knocked out by the quality vs. price. Although I know nothing about any of these models, I do like that the Tascams have some EQ adaptation switches on them--something I definitely need in my own quirky studio. If you have any chance to try them in a shop or at home, that's the best answer. In my case, I bought three contenders and kept the one that spoke to me.

Edit: I just checked my Tape Ops and only a review of a cheaper Tascam model there. Definitely in the current copy of EQ, though, and in one other current mag (Future Music, SOS, etc.).

I also own and recommend the the rp5's. good overall response and as good of a bass presence as you can expect from a 5" woofer. excellent quality.

I've decided to up my budget a bit. I'm looking at the RP6 now as I've found someone that is not too much of a rip off in Australia. I can't afford a sub at the moment and I guess these would get a better bass response. Are they worth $200 AUD more than the RP5 is there that much of a difference?

Go with the RP-6

Definitely go with the Rokit Rp6's!!!...They are truly awesome monitors for the price!!!...If you can spend the money....then go with them. The RP6's are a big step better than the RP5's,...better bass response and overall better sound.

I've talked with many studio engineers and they actually recommend the RP6's over the RP8's, because when you get into the 8" woofers,...they actaully color the sound a bit more and it can be deceiving when you mix or master. It seems as if the RP6's are completely balanced in terms of their overall response....I've listened to them all....RP5's, 6 and 8 and I'm actually buying a set of the RP6's this weekend!!!

You can't go wrong....spend the extra cash if you have it!!

You wouldn't believe it but just after I got a really good quote (for Australia) of AUD$700 for the RP6's and was just about to order them, someone else I made an offer to previously accepted my offer for a pair of new but shop floor demo series one V4's air expressed to Australia for AUD$500, they sell for $1200 here. I checked some old reviews and they looked pretty good and I've only got a small space as well. So I couldn't resist. I also realised the the RP6's are not that small.
