Even cheeseheads get the blues!!!

Ok... I'm not from Wisconsin, but my friend Hank Mohaski is.

I recorded this slow, dripping, blues groove a while back, and I sent it to Hank to record some spoken word over top. He has this strange poetry thing down, and his voice is weird but ultimately cool...

Anyway, here are the results:



The tune is called "Single Soul Madison."

All guitar except the last solo was recorded through one of those $25 smoky amps, into a VC3 and then toyed with in SF Acoustic Mirror. I really dig the sound that "toy" makes. :)

Let me know whatcha think...

that wave at the beginning almost washed me away...great effect.....

Pretty good playing...I like the guitar tones.....

The spoken word part with its panning and delayed on one side added great texture to this "moody" piece....

Great work.....

Hell yeah this thing is on! I love this song for three reasons: (1) The 7th you add on the bassline on the first return to the tonic. It always had me wondering if you were gonna pull a changeup, and whether it was intentionally intentional, or accidntal (hey, i'm a sceptic). (2) Dude's voice is really good. Love to hear something by him that isn't doubled (as to concentrate more on the voice itself, as opposed to figuring out the words). Reminds me of one of the fellows in Moxy Fruvous ("Video Bargainville" is best example I can think of). (3) The sounds of the tracks themselves; the lead, the vocals, the surf... soothing stuff.

Gripes: Muddy bassline. I like how much power the bass imparts, but there seems to be a bit of reverb that gets in the way of the transitions. That, or another track (the vibraphone? swore I heard one) is sharing "bass space." Vocals. Have no idea what he's saying unless you ignore the rest of the song. Guitar. Was dying to hear the "freakout." And maybe some cool vibes solo section.

But those are MY preferences; what you've got right now will keep me listening for quite a while. I love moody stuff like that.

I agree the bassline needs to fit in a little more somehow. No vibes anywhere on the track... Just bass, drums, guitar, and the little keyboard chord hits... The rhythm guitar might be what you're hearing.

I agree, I probably could have freaked out on the guitar at some point, but I do that all the time. lol

I actually wanted the vocals to be something that you kept going back to and relistening to in order to get them all. I don't think they are too "hidden," but just enough to make it difficult and mysterious. That's why I layered them like that - to make things a little harder... You can kind of zone out and catch the hint of what he's saying and just groove on the sound of his voice, or you can really focus on the voice - or on one speaker of the voice, to hear what he's saying.

My absolute favorite is the first track - "The Astronaut Who Smoked." It's 8 minutes of coolness. "Houston says don't light that thing in there..." Fucking genius. :cool:
 
Man, the music is great even though its pretty minimal. But I really don't think that guy has a cool voice at all and its just swimming in delay/reverb so you really wouldn't know even if it was. Again, great music...you might want to flesh out the guitar a bit more and turn this into a song. BTW, I've been to Madison, WI many many times and its a cool town and I just don't get WTF this guy is talking about.
