Just wondering if anyone has ever tried the EV RE20 on toms before and i was wondering the results. Seems it could do pretty well on the floor tom.

I've never tried my RE20 on floor tom before... but, one problem might be bleed over.

Haha thanks DJL,

I guess i should have checked up on the specs on that before i got on here and made myself look like an idiot. ;)

Danny

Hey Danny, your question doesn't make you look like an idiot... heck, asking questions is how we learn... and a little bleed over doesn't mean it can't still sound good.

Hah yah i guess so.

Guess i will just have to try it on toms and see for myself. It seems the floor tom normally gets quite a bit of bleed for me anyway.

Danny

seems to me like it would bleed like hell...ive used the RE-20 about 8-10ft in front of and 6ft above the kit to mic the whole thing with one mic...or just added a BD mic to bring it out a bit, and it picked up everything in the room

I've used it on kick and have gotten very good results.

Well the main reason why i asked is because i have a new studio now and it is equipped with 4 of them. And i couldnt figure out why the engineer that owned it before needed 4 :D. So i thought maybe he used them for toms.

Wait, i was just checking through descriptions of the RE20. Isnt it cardiod? By what you were saying suspected it was Omni. It says its description it has amazing rear rejection. Is the description full of crap? :D

Danny

The RE20 can be a nice kick drum mic if you like that sound, but it seems to pick a lot of bleed.. I use mine mostly for voiceovers.

yah i believe yah. I guess i wont really know until i try. It was just weird why their are so many. I dunno what else he would use them for. I guess i could start up a radio station with them.

Danny

I don't know... what kind of work did he do in the studio? Maybe he did a lot of pre-recorded round table type discussions for radio or maybe cartoon voices and etc.

He pretty much did everything. Its also god a 5.1 surround and video production room in the other room, although most of that equipments taken out.

Its a pretty nice studio thats been around for around 20 years. Basically i got totally lucky with it.

But mainly he was just a big time everything. Bands, Video Overdubbing, pretty much everything. Ill be running the entire business that was pulling in $100,000 year. Its gonna be pretty interesting. I got the job because theres really not any other people in the area with the experience and i happened to be in the right place at the right time. I was kinda disappointed because he took alot of his mics, like the vintage ones But im going through everything now to figure out what everything is. I was really mad he took his ribbons :D. Anyway, he might just have ended up with the RE20s maybe by accident but i was curious to find out what he could have done with them. Maybe ill call him up tomorrow and find out a couple of things.

Danny

Humm, I'm kind of curious why he had so many of them too... please post what he tells you. Thanks

Havnt got ahold of him yet. He just moved so i think he still settling in and stuff.

He used be the lead sound technician at our local college, which is how he got hooked up with some cool stuff. I noticed today some of them have labels from the college on them. The college refurbishes their stuff every couple of years so i bet he just ended up with them. The college radio station must have been getting rid of them. But ill find out why he kept them. He got some cool stuff that way actually. Told me once he opened a professors drawer and pulled out a salt and pepper shaker mic and he asked if he could take it off the prefossers hands for 30 bucks. The professor didnt know what it was so he called it a deal har har.

Too bad he took that stuff though, he was loaded with cool mics.

I have used re20's on toms...especially the floor tom(s), but prefer them on kicks. I think they get a great kick sound. No over emphasis on the low end. Bleed has never been a problem, and infact I'd almost prefer omni mics on toms and such, rather than crappy cardiod mics with lousy off axis pickup patterns....of course dealing with phase problems. It seems that most people usually cram their mics right up in the kick drum anyway. But really close micing [on the toms] usually seems to combat the bleed problem up there too.....not to mention a well adjusted gate thrown in for good looks too. Nothing like adding up 4 or 5 mics with muddy off axis responses to get a "blanket" thrown over your drum sound.

I have never heard of anyone complaining about leakage problems using the re20. Great voice over mic too... ....you see them in all the radio station [tv] shots with the ubiquitous 309a shockmount.

RE20s are great voiceover/broadcast mics. If the university had a radio station they would likely have a bunch. Frankly they RE20 carries a pretty good resale value so a strategy might be to sell them and get something specifically for kick and toms like the Sennhieser e602 and e604
