Anyone heard or used this quaint looking mic before? Opinions much appreciated, thanks!

You know, they're underrated, cheap (I've paid 25 bucks for a trio of 664s in their boxes), and sound pretty good. Make sure you get the cable when you buy one, though, it's a weird 4 pin thingy...
It's my mic of choice, after a lengthy and fun shoot-out with a U87, RE20, KM84, etc. etc. for sarod, a fretless Turkish instrument...
"For every pot there's a lid"...

Hey, I was on another board asking the same question, and the guy told me it's only use was 1)as a paperweight 2)hammering nails! Ah well, looks helluva cool though doesn't it? How's it sound like on vocals, guitar amps?

It's famous for hammering nails ("The Buchanan Hammer") because an EV exec in the 60's hammered a nail into the podium with one before giving a speech at a NAMM show, then used the mic to give his speech...

Or at least that's the legend...

If you can get one real cheap, grab it. It's fine on amp cabs, and even kick in a pinch.

I think one reason they're not respected is because there's so damn many of them. I mean, EV must've made bazillions of those things...

i got one of these for free from my church. I tried to use it on live vocals but the gain was too low and there was alot of feedback. I have heard of people fiting it with a SM58 capsule for a cool looking good sounding mic. i have used it for a drum overhead, ambiant mic on acoustic guitar and for just looking cool on stage.
