ok, this has nothing to do with recording but.....

is it like audio, where quality really counts, or can i get away going cheap?....i need 100ft.

I disagree, get the Monster XL3000 CAT 5 Cable - Gold Connectors to. $50 a foot, it's a steal!

:D

i was thinking Canare with titanium connectors, but $50/ft. sounds inviting.....

Get a box of 1000ft of 100Mbps enhanced Cat5. It'll last you for the next ten years and you can sell it to your friends to take the load off. I've gone through four 1000 ft reels in the past 2 years this way, and I figure i've saved at least $100 over buying cable on a per-project basis.

I'm lucky, I usually get to borrow surplus CAT5 cable from work (The end pieces of 1000 ft rolls). Needless to say we buy the good stuff.

It DOES make a difference to get good cable. Especially if you are going to have long cable runs, and ESPECIALLY if you are going to run it through walls - who wants to do that crap more than once????

Spend the $$$$, you'll reget it if you don't.

that's why i just ordered a linksys wireless router and PCMCIA card.

i've got an RJ-45 cable that is long enough to trapse all over my house. Since i've got a split level foyer, the cable goes right up the center of the house when i'm upstairs.

i even take it out onto the backyard when i'm making barbecue.

but i'm getting my wife a laptop for christmas and i don't want two 100' RJ-45 cables spewn about the house so I'm going wireless.

the wireless router and 1 card can get had on ebay for around $180. the RJ-45 cost me like 10 bucks at Staples.

Wireless is the way to go, I have a Dlink wireless router, a usb wireless nic on my wifes machine, and a PCMCIA wireless in my thinkpad(well, its the companys thinkpad, but I pretend its mine). I can even post on this board from the shitter....In fact I may be right now, you'll never know.

Sure, 802.11b wont do 100 meg transferes, but neither will my cable modem. My main box is hooked directly to the router, but after playing with wireless, I will never run another cat 5 cable again.

I agree wireless has a lot of merit. Call me a traditionalist. Also when I wired my house wireless was not as far along as it is now.

On the other hand, my 100 mbit ethernet sure does come in hand when I copy 3 gigs of compressed Cakewalk BUN files from my basement to upstairs computer :)

If I needed that kind of bandwith, yeah, the old fashion wire way would be the way to go. We got a 10gig ethernet setup in my lab at work.....I want one of those in my house.
