Ummm... Peritus, I wouldn't get too excited about this. People have been mysteriously disappearing off of UP-Fiddler's 'buddy list' for the last few years!

I'm going to temporarily lock this thread to make sure it doesn't get polluted by the present unpleasantness. I will add 12 hours to the deadline to make up for it, so the new deadline will be 12 midnight EST, Wednesday, February 8.

Back open! New deadline will be tomorrow morning, 8:00 am EST, Wednesday, February 8.

To those who sent me messages, I didn't close the thread because of anything here, it was because of the vile filth that was posted on other threads here by "basement tracks", who is now banned.

So feel free to carry on with silliness--just don't expect those posts to win!

Or will they

Found this cool info in the uber-old thread bag....

But "clean" harmonica is another story. Dick Gardiner, who used to play with the Harmonicats and now repairs Shure ribbon mics, told me a facinating story of the Harmonicat's pilgrimage to Milwaukee, Wis., the home of the Bob Paquette mic collection (one of the largest in the world) to try out EVERY mic to see which one is the "best" to record clean harmonica. They played through everything, and settled on a Shure 330 ribbon. Needless to say, put up a pop screen to avoid blowing the ribbon out if you're going to record harp with a ribbon...

The mic is bipolar, I have bipolar disorder....hmmmmmm. See the connection. I would type something down right funny, something so funny you would be droping loads in your pants. But alas, I have nothing, so don't give it to me.

clsoing arguments.

I should get the mic because I'm not making you read too much. That, and I took that Lafayette tube off your hands. This would be your way of thanking me.

I rest my case.

mmmmm that mic would sound great pressed up against the grille of my 150w spider II...

OK contest is closed! If you post after this post, you are TOO LATE!

Also PM entries will not be considered. Sorry, rules were pretty clear here.

I'll announce the winner after I reread the thread later today.

And the winner is . . .

First I'll run through the posts I thought merited comments:

northsiderap #5: I like the DIY angle, that's a big part of my philosophy. Even if you can afford to buy stuff, being able to fabricate or customize means that your studio fits you like a glove.

northsiderap #11: This was the single best instance of writing:

Just to flux the gauss - to floss the flux between iron poles - the goals to toss into the fluxed, gaussed, pole-flossed foil. The source transformed & transformer formed, from motor reposed and dormant, then excited to harmonic norms, taking the forms of source (with some loss.) The source is deformed, but awesome.

Too many people seemed to forget it was an essay contest, which means that quality of writing counts too. Nicely done there.

Having said that, I didn't think much of your subsequent efforts :p

upfiddler #18: Clever, but I don't think the rules allowed binary, since Babelfish doesn't translate it.

To all the "poetic" entries: guys, have you ever read an actual poem that was written, say, after 1900?

rsolinski #54: Good, other than the stray apostrophe.

notbradsohner #56: Of all the begging posts, this might have been the best.

Marik #72: Tempting. Very, very, very, very tempting. But in good conscience, I'm not sure I can turn a donation into a transaction, even if it benefits all of mic-dom.

LeeRosario #134: I like how the pictures start out semi-related and rapidly degenerate into non sequitor.

Two significant events occurred shortly after the colonist's arrival: two "friendly" Indians were baptized and a child was born. Virginia Dare, as the baby was named, became the first child born to English-speaking parents in the new world.

And I bet you didn't know that I live in Dare County, where two towns are named after those Indians, Manteo and Wanchese :) But ultimately I can't reward plagiarism.

OK then, the finalists will be northsiderap #11, rsolinski #54, notbradsohner #56.

Everybody who has previously posted on this thread, and who is not one of those three, may argue about who you liked best, and I will consider your comments in choosing the winner.

In the meantime, I'm going to post some pics and spectral analysis, for posterity :)

I'm going with rsolinski #54....

By the way... It's been fun! Thanks!

Edit: I found something cool today that offsets not getting the mic. It's a 1950s Franz Electric Metronome ($3.99 @ Village Thrift). The picture isn't mine (Mine has a red light up top that flashes to the beat. :) )....

Picks

If I have to vote for someone other than myself :p , I'd pick #54. This post was very enlightening and spiritual for me.

Although somewhat cliche' in wording, the meaning was very well stated and fundamentally profound!

For all of us that coveted this mic or any other material thing recently, this is written almost as a prayer for wisdom; the wisdom to rediscover the truly important things in life, to cleanse the mind & spirit of those things which can distract us from the reality that we are surrounded by too much beauty to focus so narrowly and become frustrated about the 'small stuff.'

What could be more important than that plea for wisdom, in any words?

I do believe that I should have a good shot at this, but more than one person has suggested that I am probably doing myself more harm than good by using a rap oriented name :(
