Error in voice recording

Hello everyone. I (amateur) have recorded a a litlle interview, but something went wrong.
Can you please tell me how is it caused, how to avoid it next time, and whether it is possible to correct it now.

I have attached an sample where I think you will be able to spot the problem.

It looks like you may have set your record level too high. It seems to be clipping an analog stage.

So is there any way how to correct it now?

I think it's too bad to recover, I'm afraid. We're not looking at occasional peaks, it's distorted throughout. Did you not notice when you were recording? It's pretty obvious.

And as for fixing it for next time, don't let your levels go into the red area. xD
