I'm not as stupid as this question sounds.... I just don't know anything about recording equipment. The only way I can learn is hands on .... so I went on ebay and purchases a Yamaha MC803 mixer..

I've tried recording from computer based programs but I don't know the terms in reguards to recording so it is hard to experiment and learn.

What else to I need to record, playback, and edit vocals or instrumentals?

Besides a mixing board, mic w/ cords, and mic preamp, what do I need? Should I buy a Adat recording machine or is there something less expensive that I can purchase to practice recording?

I know this is beyond a newbie question but I'm just trying to learn what it is the engineer does so I can become a more successful artist.

You could use your computer, in which case you'd only need a pro soundcard and recording software. You can get a good soundcard for $100 and pay anywhere from $35-600 for recording software. Most of these programs include mixers.

This assumes you are not computing on a Commodore 64. You need decent processing power/memory.

Is there a 8 channel sound card so that I can connect and record 8 channels directly into recording software?

you need to record from 8 sources simultaneously?

Probably not... Only two at a time. I just thought it would be easier... Money's not really an object right now one because I'm not trying to get the best quality... just some pre production and I want to learn how to mix vocals. I really want to know what an engineer is capable of when I'm in a recording studio.

If you can recomend any mixing videos that would be great.

Okay reading this back .. I do look like an idiot...
