Equipment Question

I'm not as stupid as this question sounds.... I just don't know anything about recording equipment. The only way I can learn is hands on .... so I went on ebay and purchases a Yamaha MC803 mixer..

I've tried recording from computer based programs but I don't know the terms in reguards to recording so it is hard to experiment and learn.

What else to I need to record, playback, and edit vocals or instrumentals?



Besides a mixing board, mic w/ cords, and mic preamp, what do I need? Should I buy a Adat recording machine or is there something less expensive that I can purchase to practice recording?

I know this is beyond a newbie question but I'm just trying to learn what it is the engineer does so I can become a more successful artist.

Well first of all KISS!! "Keep it simple stupid" (I always have to tell myself that). :$ Anyway I found out after 2 years of wheel spinning that I didn't even need a mixer. LOL. But I recommend going PC based with a cost effective beginners VST software like cool edit. Just make sure you go to Guitar Center and get a 24 bit sound card before you do anything else. Then go to the microphone forum and study up cause thats where all the knowledge of capturing the sound is at. Then you will need to spend some time in the mixing/mastering forum to learn to combine your separate tracks into one. The best advice I can give is go VST technology, for ease of undo! Hope that helps ya.

I tried the pc thing. When it came to adding echo or reverb it got a little bit too technical. I'm trying to learn from nobs... they are easier to find and simpler too me. Thanks for the advice. I'll definately go that route also.


Still need to know if there is anything cheaper that a adat machine for playback and editing? It's so much simpler in the studio... from my point of view.
