Hi Guys, I am at present designing my Home Recording Studio for next year, I want to plan everything carefully and taking my time. I am a musician and will be recording alot of ethnic instruments that i play with keyboards and Reason and Logic Pro. Can anyone give me a break down on what gear I will be needing for a good setup based around a Mac,... G5 maybe.

Budget around £6000 and a bit over, by next year.

cheers

I was in a similar situation...

I took my time and did a lot of research on different things. I never planned on recording drums, I stick mainly to vocal, acoustic guitar, electric guitar/bass...

If you think you'll only record a few tracks at a time, then don't waste your money buying an expensive 24 track mixing board... i would go with a nice brand 12 track.

Also look into decent mics... learn about the frequency response curves of mics, rooms, and things like that.

Get a good preamp, compressor...

That would make a good start... take your time and research everything to the max!

Mac Studio

Thanks Guys, but where can i find a full listing of what i need, eg:

• Mac G5
• 12 Track Mixer
• Midi Sound Interface etc

cheers :)

you'll probably get 10,000 different lists of stuff to buy...

try to go about this logically...

first think about what you're trying to record and how many track's you'll need to record at one time (then add a few more to that number).

as i understand you have about $12,000 american. i'm not sure what g5's go for over there, but here i'd say around $3,000ish for all bells and whistles.. (i could be wrong, i'm a pc person myself).

*important note* learn how to read frequency response curves and what they mean. also learn about db floors (signal to noise ratio). these types of things are good to know when researching datasheets on items.

basics:

mixing board (12,16 track..)
d/a a/d interface to the PC
lot's and lot's of TRS cables, XLR, and shielded mono's
a decent compressor (zillions of options there... i like tube compressors myself)
a decent gate (also zillions of options)
a good mic (research this option based on what you want to record)
a good preamp for the mics (also research preamps)

and then you'll need 10 million other things :) but these are the VERY VERY VERY basics of home recording. as you get into it, you'll find that you like certian equipment over other stuff. don't let these people in here tell you, "this brand sucks... that brand sucks", do your own research and put together what you like, because remember this is all your hobby and should be FUN for you.
