Equipment in order

Is this the correct order and functions for the following:

EQUIP FUNCTION

1-Mic Picks up sound

2-Cable If XLR is the best, why do
so many recording inputs
require 1/4" plugs? Also,
what are some good names
to look for when buying
cables?

3-DI Box If you have bal. lines do u
need a DI Box?

4-Comp/ I have no clue what these
limit/ do. Call me a genious but
gates I think one compresses, ones limits, and one is a
software guru. Do u need
all/any of these?

5-Mixer Kind of know this one

6-Recording What do I need to make
Device(s) CD's that I can listen to in my car or at a friend's
house.

Thanks in advance,

I have some of the answers. XLR cables are best for microphones. You can run longer low-impedance lines without noise or signal loss. A mixer and recorder will usually use 1/4" high-impedance in/outs because the cables will be shorter and these are less expensive to design into equip. also less expensive to buy cables.

I would like to make CD's myself..I'm saving my money for a stand alone CD recorder. I'd like to get the best one I can, because I heard that some of the cheap ones out there are not very good. (1 bit A/D converters ?) versus 20 Bit?

A compressor is great for leveling out performance volumes. I love it for Bass and Vocals mostly. I don't have a limiter yet.

Sincerely;

Dom Franco
