EQing

The hardest part of the recording prosess,for me,has been figuring out eq.Getting everything to be distinct yet blend together.I know that when something sounds good soloed it won't usually fit into the mix.My question is should I record my instruments the way they sound best and eq after everything is recorded or try to picture how it will fit into the mix and eq accordingly before hand.

Use mic selection and positioning first . . . then EQ as a last resort. I tend to think if you use good/decent outboard EQ on the way in, you'll be better off.

I used to be a major advocate of plugin EQ, but I'm a convert. I just find I'm getting better sounds when using outboard eq for some reason.

record flat minus problem eq changes. Once somethings on tape forget about being able to fix wrong eqing. Its the same with compression eq flat except obvious things like roll offs etc.
and chess outboard eq works best cause you use your ears more then your eyes. If you stare at the screen to much you might be tempted to go with known fail safes instead of tweaking a eq to taste, but the great thing about knobs is we like to play with them thus it usually sounds better. for this reason lots of times i quit lookin at the mixer kill the moniter and just plain listen to the tracks

So are you saying I should try to envision where I will want an instrument in the mix and eq it that way before recording?Thanks for the help.
