Perhaps I overlooked it, but I don't even see an amp listed in your gear descriptions? Are you using only the V-amp and going direct in? I am assuming that by mentioning "cost effective" you don't want somebody to tell you to go buy a new tube half stack, so I'll try to stick with what you listed--If you are using the V-amp for direct to board or direct recording, I can't imagine what other effects you would need. I have one which works in a pinch for recording and I have explored the sounds it is capable of to a pretty good extent. My suggestion is to really explore what the V-amp can do if that is your only "amp" option right now. Be sure to try different cabinet settings as this shapes the tone almost more than anything else on the device. Basically, just don't go with the presets. I would not recommend adding any other effects to achieve a simple death metal tone, especially when using the V-amp as it will probably only sound worse. I also feel that a sonic maximizer on heavy guitar is kind of pointless, but then again I've never tried it with a modeler or anything like that...
