maybe this should be in the newbies thread?

but i was just wondering why its "bad/wrong" to EQ passive monitors, but using EQ switches on Actives seems to be ok?

I would expect one is no worse or better than the other, more how it's done and why. For example, the active's few broad driver level controls, versus the narrower filters sometimes used to try to fix room problems.

actives can boost as well as cut, whereas passives can only cut...i think. does that make any sense at all?

I would say that eqing either a passive or an active would achieve the same thing, assuming the eq for each is identical topology. I don't think only one or the other should be eq'ed unless the acoustic of the room requires it. Whether you are shooting for a flat response or something that compliments the room and feels right, I would place the speakers and listen without an eq first, then address the limitations. I would personally doubt I would use any eq "button" because it is very limiting, generally they are set to a specific frequency and Q as well as gain. An outboard eq would give flexability, either fixed or parametric.

or something like that...

Bingo.

But to clarify, actives are much easier to EQ because they have built-in amps and more control. You can easily adjust tweeter levels or high-pass frequencies. With passives, that becomes much more diffcult and can introduce more phase issues as you have to play around with impedance instead of amplification.

just a phase

thanks for the posts.

Yareek, that got me reading some articles...the term "phase".
I've gotten a bit better understanding. Your right the active offer some more versatility for sure. Its just tech-hobby curiosity, Tech talk....

I do pretty good until they start doing the Linkwitz theorum formulas from plaet Zeptune??
