EQ Frequencies

Locking Nut

New member
Does anybody know of a resource somewhere where I can find out about which frequencies to boost and cut for certain sounds?

I have a Boss GT8 and it has 3 EQ's, I know the general idea of boosting/cutting lows, mids n highs but I've no idea which frequencies to choose to boost/cut.

Here are a number of links to check out:

http://www.recordingwebsite.com/articles/eqprimer.php

http://homerecording.about.com/od/techniques/a/eqarticle.htm

http://har-bal.com/frequency.php

http://www.dplay.com/tutorial/freqpaint.html

I also highly recommend a book called "The Recording Engineer's Handbook" by Bobby Owsinski. It's worth buying and there is a lot of information in there that I'm sure you would find useful.

However, while there are general principles regarding the use of eq, it's really not one of those "paint by the numbers" type deals. How the eq is used will depend very much on the tracks that are in the song and how they relate to one another.

Good luck!

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out. I know there aint no set rules for EQ'ing n stuff it's just that I want to know what I'm doing so that when I want to change something I know why I'm doing it and which way to turn etc.

There is a chart or two at the middle of this article on BB's site. It is an excellent starting point or guide IMHO. Hope you don't mind the link BB?

I forgot I'd started this thread, DOH.

Anyway, thanks for those links SonicAlbert they were just what I wanted. I now understand EQ'ing and have got some very pleasing results straight away.

Thanks for the other link to BBs articles and thanks to BB for writing them :)
