EQ confusion

Ok, I'll go ahead and tell you, I'm a moron, so if you're ofended by stupidity, don't read any more of this.

I'm trying to grasp the concept of a "q" on a parametric eq. Once I enter the frequency on a band, if I turn the "q" all the way to the left, every frequency above that frequency is boosted until it hits the next band, and if I turn the "q" all the way to the left, every frequency above that frequency is decreased and gain and every frequency below that is boosted. If the "q" is straight up.......every frequency half way up from that freqency is boosted?

Is this anywhere close to being sorta right?
 
Nope.

Imagine a graphic EQ. Turning the Q all the way to the right and adjusting the gain would be like just adjusting one slider on a 31 band EQ.

Turning the Q all the way to the left (and adjusting the gain down) would be like making a smiley face on the graphic.

The frequecy knob lets you select the center frequency you will be adjusting.
The gain knob is self explanitory
the Q knob adjusts how much of the frequecies surrounding the center frequency get affected.
 
"Q" is width

on a parametric EQ... is it on your PC? can you see the EQ? If you can, it's paragraphic.

A lower Q value will widen the bell of the boost of cut, a higher Q will shrink the bell of the boost or cut.

A high Q is useful for cutting very specific frequencies, or if you sweep it you'll get wierd effects - that's how a wah pedal works.

low Q's usually produce gentler, natural boosts over many frequencies.

It's just the width

Picture a graphic EQ with the sliders,now slide one in the middle up.Thats low "Q" now slide the ones around it up and make it look like a mountain,thats wide "Q"

But now picture parametric EQ and use the knobs and picture the similar pattern.Well its kinda like that but...not really,lol. :D
 
q can also be thought of as the width or slope of the curve. a larger q value will create a gentler slope with a wider curve, whereas a smaller q will create a steeper slope and a narrower curve.
