ok guys... I've made the change from recording and mixing analog, to mixing in the box...

simply put, I now need a good EQ and reverb... plugs!

For the EQ end of things, I'm scoping out the URS Neve seen here:

http://www.pluginz.com/product/12601?g=3435#gallery

anyway... I'm mixing in Reaper right now... this is compatible, correct?

also looking for a reverb... any suggestions would be great...

:)

The URS Neve EQ is pretty good, but overall, I prefer the URS A Series 4 Band! Modeled after the API 550B, it does a respectable job of replicating it, and it is a more versatile EQ overall.

If you are mixing a lot of Rock and Roll, the API I think will be more to your liking!

I tend to use the Neve on stuff like vocals and keyboards. It really doesn't have that much "character" like the API.

For reverb, give Ambience a try. http://magnus.smartelectronix.com/ It is really quite good. My only complaint is that you cannot control the early reflections. But, you cannot beat the price! :D

If more control is what you are after, the RoomVerb m2 is a freakin' WET DREAM!!! LOL http://www.kvraudio.com/get/520.html If I really want to dig in and create a cool reverb, this is what I use!

I will use Ambience when I don't have the time to mess with RoomVerb and need something good sounding in a hurry.

A convolution reverb like SIR is good but there is also one built into Reaper.

A great, free reverb is GlaceVerb.

A great, not-free reverb is Waves Renaissance reverb. I don't like the other reverbs I've tried, I guess I'm picky.

As far as free reverbs go, I've had good results from the reverb in Kaerhaus' (sp) classic series, Freeverb Too, and SIR. Although I found SIR to be a bit resource hungry for my system. I generally go back to the Kaerhaus one in most projects.

I don't use any non-free plugs so I wouldn't know about them.

What I like about the Kjaerhus Classic verb is the negative range of its predelay control. Using a slight negative value with a very short verb can be good for altering the tone quality of an ac gtr track with a different sound than you can get with EQ - kind of a colored bloom effect but without adding a noticeable verb sound.

For normal verb use, SIR is great. But you have to experiment a lot with the impulses you use, length and EQ to get good results.

The URS EQ's are pretty cool. I like the API better as well, but it still does not seem to have that real API aggresion. What I like about the URS EQ's though is that they seem to be more "friendly" than most plugin EQ's and feel more like a console. The URS compressors I actually like even more. My favorite EQ in the plugin realm right now is the Waves SSL. It has a more aggressive character and is what I feel to be the closest to using a good console EQ on the plugin market right now. Not only that, but the compressor that comes in the package is nice as well, and the channel strip is incredible for a plugin.

As far as reverbs, I rely mostly on convolution reverbs with a good convolution set. However, the IK Multimedia Classik Reverb collection is also pretty sweet sounding, as is the palte 140 on the UAD card. I also like the wavearts Masterverb.

Yeah, I agree that the URS API still falls short of the hardware. But, I would venture that it is as close to it as the UAD 1176 is to the hardware. That is encouraging. :)

The Audiometrics PLpar EQ is good if you're wanting something clean/transparent. I love it but it's very heavy on the CPU.

FV, have you tried the Waves SSL plug set yet? In myopinion the Waves SSL is a definate step up from even the URS. I am really curious to hear the Waves API collection now.

No, I haven't tried them yet. Last time I tried, the new VST version was crashing my box. :( I am no big Waves fan with their iLok and crap either. When we purchased from them long ago, we got the cracks to avoid iLok. :)

I am not in love with all the Ilock stuff, but I have also never had any issues with them or any other dongles. I do like the URS stuff, but the waves is the closest I have used to feeling like analog. How it compares to an actual SSL is hard for me to say since the few times I have worked on an actual SSL there were also many other differing factors to try and remember for a fair comparison.

i tried the reverbs on a snare... not bad... and the ilok bullshit on the urs site is causing me to consider uad...

still looking for that special eq.

thanks for the help

And now for something completly different...

Looking for a special EQ...

I guess that depends upon just what your definition of "special" is.

The guys above so far have done a great job of recommending plugs intended on emulating classic analog EQs, which are indeed special.

Just to give you an option on a different tack, let me throw Roger Nichols Digital's Uniquelizer into the ring as something worth looking at.

It emulates nothing. But for usefulness, flexibility and neutrality, IMHO, it's hard to get better bang for the buck.

When was the last time you've even used the real hardware versions?

I'll bet you dont' even know what they look like.

:D

I'll check that out...

what I like about the urs plugins and the uad plugins are that they have "knobs" like on a mixer... that's exactly what I want... urs would have had my money if it didn't require that ilok garbage... basically, I want something like the urs neve or the uad neve... I've been mixing on a mackie board, so I'm use to turning circles...:) and mainly good sound quality... but, with the circles...

Buy the URS plugs, then find the cracks. :)

I own the waves api, ssl, and vintager (neve) collections.

They are all i use these days.
The technology has finally come around and waves hit it right on the head.
Awesome sounding stuff.

Id give the demos a try. YMMV.
