EPKs: does it matter if they're homemade or not?

DAW DIY Guy
We're just starting our band, and I'm trying to keep it as DIY as possible to avoid unnecessary costs. I've got webdesign experience, so I was thinking that I'd design our website as well as an electronic press kit to put up there, in a more press-ready layout format.

My drummer, however, was checking out sonicbids.com after seeing someone else's epk, and is wondering if sonicbids is a sort of epk industry standard. We signed up for their free month trial (which isn't as free as I originally expected), and we're getting lots of emails mentioning potential opportunities (like playing at locobazooka or fenway park), contests where a handful of bands out of who-knows-how-many applicants get to play. Kind of seems like www.taxi.com, though I haven't actually tried them out.

So my question is, is an EPK from a recognized third-party like sonicbids appreciated or preferred in the industry? or does an indepently made EPK hold just much clout, assuming that it's put together as well? And if a homemade EPK is just as reputable, might it still be worth it to get a sonicbids membership in the offchance that we can play at fenway park? i know that last question is one that we'll have to answer as a band, but whatever helpful input you folks can give us will be greatly appreciated.
