Anyone who has played Epiphone Les Pauls have opinions on how they compare to Gibsons? Obviously the price difference should include the name and maybe workmanship, but how does the sound compare? Any other pros or cons to Epiphone over Gibsons?

I've played a couple of Epiphone LP's when trying out amps or effects, and I liked the feel and the tone was pretty good too. I own a 1976 Gibson LP Standard (goldtop) and a 2001 Gibson LP Standard (vintage sunburst, think brown) and well.....come on why even bother comparing them. The tone is richer on the Gibsons and it's just a more solid, heavy piece of wood. It's a different guitar. The Gibsons are expensive and that is a factor because you can buy great guitars for half the price, but once you own one it's a difficult guitar to put down if you really connect with it. My first own cost $500 and it's now worth over $2000 now.....not many guitars can appreciate like that. I'll never sell my '76 goldtop because of sentimental value but it plays better now than it did 20 years ago.....most guitars would have fallen apart by now.

Why bother comparing guitars. I buy guitars based on what they are, not what they aren't. If you play an Epiphone and like it, then just buy it. I think they are terrific values, and with the money you save not buying the over-priced Gibson you can spend on amplification.....which is probably more important than the guitar itself. Hamer, Epiphone, Yamaha, and others make some great guitars for not that much money. It didn't used to be that way. It's surprising how good the quality control is from the guitars made in Korea and the pickups today are outstanding on some of these guitars.

Sorry, I can't tell you whether I would buy the Epiphone, I'd have to go play them again. I'm trying not to go into music stores for awhile. I have a slight G.A.S. problem, and it's not from the mexican food I had last night.

Hi guys
I bought an Epi Les Paul Custom last month(used-$450).Perhaps there is a big difference between the standard and the custom.I had heard the standard was plywood with substandard hardware. My custom is solid mahogony with a carved maple cap.Binding and inlay work are flawless.Gold plated hardware and excellant cosmetics.I call her Barbara cause she "plays like buttah".
Seriously, comparing the Epi and Gib stats for the custom, the only listed difference is that the gibby has an ebony board and my epi has a rosewood board.
As a former guitar tech for Charvel/Jackson I have a critical eye in examining guitars.I'm not just gushing. But perhaps it is only the Customs that are nice because I have no experience with the epi standard LPs.YMMV.

Sorry for going off topic.

Tom. Any personal experience with the Jackson PS-4?

Played, tuned and repaired em.I bought only Charvels, however, for my personal use.Including several nice prototypes when Akai bought IMC and made the move in 98.

Thanks fire but...
there are probably a dozen regional and national acts doing business as Catch 22.I'm partial to a ska outfit out of New Jersey...

But none of those fellows are doing business in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. We,however have played here as Catch 22 since 95 and thats how people know us.It has never been a problem.

My older brother Mark played in a signed band in the 70s called Rush. When the canadian boys came along ,they changed to First Rush and later Dallas after signing with Polygram/Polydor.Here's a link to their prog. rock stuff on one of Mark's web pages.
