epi valve jr mods

i have an epiphone valve jr. i see online there are quite a few mods for this thing. pretty exciting. i dont want to dump alot of money into it, but i want to increase the headroom before the amp starts breaking up. basically, i want more clean tone. would new tubes do this? if so, which tubes would you recomend...?

Try a 12AU7 or 12AT7 in the front end. But I agree, if you want clean, get a bigger amp.

i do have a bigger amp. just looking for some easy, not so expensive solutions. i will try different preamp tubes.
