Hey all,
I'm interested in getting some EPI 100 monitors to mix and track my music on. I have read many good reviews, including an endorsement by Tore Johansson, producer of the Cardigans, who swears by them for all his projects.
This in mind, I have found some for sale, refoamed, ($40 each), but want to make sure I'm prepared for all I'll need before buying them, like which stereo receiver I should pick and what kind of maintenance I should prepare for. Any ideas?
The kind of music I've been composing and recording is quite varied, ranging from old-fashioned jazz, reggae-like sounds, to 70's glam rock, to beatles-esque pop, to 80's and early 90's r&b. I currently record and track everything to computer with a sound card (Presonus Firebox) and a preamp (Presonus Bluetube), primarily use guitar and bass with effect pedals in the way of instruments, and finally my voice with a AKG perception 200 condenser mic. I also use a step sequencer to program prerecorded live drum hits which I run through a tape machine (Akai GX-620) to get a warmer sound.
All this in mind, overall, the 70's aesthetic of recording has always appealed to me, but I have always neglected the area of good monitors since it seemed totally out of my league and way out of my price range. Right now, all I use are a pair of AKG K141 headphones to mix on.
Well, the affordability and quality of these EPI 100's I hope will be my beginning point to understanding the art of monitoring. I am very new to this area so I hope you'll all give this humble self-producing musician some guidance.
Thanks all!
Sincerely,
gac
