Entry level F/X processor. Digitech, Microverb,Lexicon?

My son is interested in doing some recording of his own at home and wants to put my 4-track (Yamaha MT120s) to to better use than taking up closet space. He has been looking at processors and on a budget considering some in the $250 range just in case he loses interest or hopefully in the future wants to expand onto bigger and better things. I know it's a you get what you pay for world, but you have to start somewhere. He's been concidering a Lexicon MPX100, Digitech S100, and Alesis Microverb4. He's into jazz, jazz rock, classic rock, classical, modern hard rock and plays guitar, bass, drums and keys when he records solo using both mics (Shure m57's) and line in. Lie I said, he's getting his feet wet now so he's not looking to put out top dollar........yet.

Stick with the Lexicon line of efx processors.Check out the MPX100 @ $190 or the much better model the MPX500 @ $275.

SamAsh NYC during inventory every 2 weeks after 5:00 pm!
Doesn't make any sense huh? When ever Sammy performs an inventory of items in stock they usually sell their gear at discount! I always walk by thee after 5 oclock to see what deals they have. The MPX 500 normally goes for $290 at Sammy's.

Thanks for the replies. I figured on the Lexicon also. Some of the guys I played with use them (MPX500 and MPX 1) and swear by them. Just thought to get impartial opinions from you guys. Sometimes the entry level products are of a lesser quality than their upper end units. You know, more like buying the name instead of a decent piece. Maybe if I buy him one, he'll let me sit in on one of his tapings.

$290 for a MPX500! Sam Ash down here was crying selling one for $365. Going price is $400.

Piece of advice. If you're ever in the market for most kinds of recording gear, contact Sammy's in NYC!
A lot of times during inventory, the place is in total disarray and the re-pricing of a lot of their gear gets totally confused!
That's why, even though, i go there 3-5 times a week, I make special pains to visit on inventory day after 5pm and catch their mistakes and take advantage of many closeouts and discounts!

Sounds like the S/A down here all the time anymore. The place is fairly new and already looks as if it's gone to the dogs. Loser know it alls for staff. It's a shame. I like Mars. Clean. Orgainized. Plenty of stuff to play around with (like a musician's Toys "r" Us) and with price matching....why go anywhere else?

I like the Digitech TRS 24. You should be able to find one cheap on the web. Versatile yet sounds great.

Thanks again for the help. I did go with the MPX100. It's a nice unit. Even my bass sounds great through it. Now if i can only find something to make me play better........
