Im running Everything through a PreSonus 2 channel Firewire interface (Firebox) to my MiniMac, On Garageband.
--Im looking for someone to suggest good preamp that would be cohesive with this type of system, as to "fatten up" my vocal/guitar tracks.
---ANY suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! --CHEERS, Peter.:)

A Pair of Neve 1084's?

It would be a lot less expensive, and far more effective, to just get the guitar tone correct at the source though.

I see you are from Portland. Just head over to Supernatural. They have a bunch of 1084's and a killer Blue Stripe that adds a nice "fatness" - It is an AMAZING comp.

a pair of Neve 1084 to use with.......... garageband?

hey, its only $8000, why not?

cmon man, lol. ;)

agreed. what kind of mic? what guitar and what amp? what style of music?

Take a look at the Groove Tubes "Brick" preamp and DI.

Chameleon Labs 7602. Goes from clean to useful saturation with hair' in between, plus eq. Pretty decent bass front end.

Don't knock GB because its free with a mac. It is way more powerful than most pc recording software costing hundreds. Name one thing that logic (at $500) does that gb dosnt do?

that wasnt the point, but i appreciate your candor. i cant imagine spending 8G on two preamps for logic, either, or in my situation, ever. i guess it is all relative.

I'd take two Neve's and GB over an Mbox with protools any day.........

The point I was making is he was asking a completely general question, and the wrong one at that IMHO. In all fairness, the 1084's certainly should be considered "fat" preamps (if there is such a thing).

I have never had the pleasure of using NEVEs and I work in Sonar, but I'm inclined to think that I would do too. (take 2 neves and GB over an MBox and pt)

Not sure of your budget or if you need 1 or 2 pre's (matched or not). There are obviously a lot of choices out there for pre's. I really don't think anyone could go wrong with the Great River ME-1NV or MP-2NV pre's. They are quite versatile (can add color/saturation by boosting input, cleaner by boosting output vs. input). They are punchy, fast, quiet with ton's of gain/head room. They are a modified clone of a Neve 1073 pre. They are spendy but to me money well spent if close to your budget. Great for vox, direct bass, mic'd guitar amp, ribbon mics, drums, sax. I will never part with my pair.

and so you decided to be a smart-ass... Bravo!

......and the pot calls the kettle black.

Actually though, I gave him the answer to his question, then kindly pointed out that IMHO he is attacking the problem all wrong. So, my point wasn't really smart ass at all. :D

Handle more than 8 inputs at one time. Use sample rates higher than 44.1 kHz. Create mix buses and add effects to them to reduce CPU overhead.

There are plenty of things GB won't do. I'm sure I could come up with at least a couple dozen things I do regularly that it just can't handle. It's fine for scratch recordings of your band or recording demos to shop around to a record label, but don't believe for one minute that it is remotely in the same class as pro applications like Logic, Digital Performer, etc. It is an entry level multitrack audio app.

Reverse phase, reverse sample, pretty much any sample editing. Also sends and aux channels. I don't disagree with you, GB is an AMAZING tool and short of a few very important things, I wouldn't even need logic!

Yeah. While I agree with this, I also think it would be entirely possible to create a top 40 hit using Garageband because it's just that powerful.

Not only is it plausable, but its true, many have. Some even rip off the pre programmed beats and riffs, just check out Usher.
