Seeing as I don't really have any family in the music business, I thought I'd come here and see what I could conjure up

I'm 20, I'm pretty much outta high school, I'm just working right now, and music is pretty much my passion. I live Southern California. I was wondering if there are any good schools to learn studio engineering or if the way to do is to become an apprentice. I live in Riverside county and I don't really wanna go to any outta state schools. Plus I live in California, 2 hours outside of L.A/Burbank. There's gotta be somethin!!

Well im in the UK so i cant really help you with local studios to get you hooked up to..

But basically what i did is just scan the internet for studios around the UK and make a list of email address, street address and phone numbers. I wrote a letter asking if i could go there for a placement etc and i literally sent it off to loads.

Dont be upset if only a few reply, but at least your getting out there. If the determination is there you'll get something no problem.

Good luck mate, Let us know how you get on.

ZioNIXI,

There is The Musician's Institute in Los Angeles and I'm sure there must be several more. I'm sure any of the guitar and/or recording magazines will have ads for them as well as the internet, as Tifstorey said.

Good luck!

If you want the COMPLETE EXPERIENCE of this particular subject you should search this bbs for "recording school" or "I wannabe an engineer." This has been discussed about 1000 times in the last 3 months. And it was all covered before in great detail.

I went to a great school called The Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences. It is not in Cali however. It's close though, in Tempe, AZ, about 6 hours from L.A. The education there was awesome, and the course was pretty short, so you wouldn't be away from home for long. I think I was there for like 8 months or so, and then they let you pick what city and what studio you want to go to as an intern, so you get the education and the real world experience. They have really cool studios, and allow students to have 24 hour access to them. It was really cool, I actally slept in the lobby a few nights while doing mix sessions over night.
