Hey there HRF, I've got a little dilemma.

I've been into recording for about a year now and I would say I have a pretty good intermediate knowledge what I'm doing, the problem is I'm short on gear to use with what I know. Tomorrow (12/23) a pair of my bands is going to be starting/finishing some home-grown recording.

I'm asking for any tips or advice I can get to polish things up.

Tomorrow I will have access to:
2xSM58
1xPG58
1xSennehiser 815
2xOld (Really Old) Sure Unidynes
2xCheap AKG Vocal mics

#1) Guitar: I treated the 58s like I would 57s and closed micd the JCM900 using the same techniques everyone talks about for classic 57 recording. Any way to make this better with what I have?

#2) Bass - Being that I'm the bass player, I chose DI only, seeing as the mics I have to choose from could only make this worse.

#3) Drums: Here's the problem. Did some preliminary tracking today, and I used the pair of 58s with the recorderman technique. Turned out fine, but tomorrow I want to add in snare and kick for quality's sake. That knocks out the 58s for overheads, so now what do I do? The Unidynes?

And, any tips for getting a workable kick sound from a 58 other than "put it in the hole, point it up" would be great. :)

Thanks a bunch guys...

Why not keep the 58's where they are since you've started there? (pull the ball grills off might get a bit more top too.
I have no opinion on the others but to try them on kick and snare. The Unidynes might be similar to 57 on snare? Position is key.
You may be able to compensate for the 'vocal contours on these with proximity to the kick's head -otherwise just in and around the hole'-? Yep.:D
Go for it.

What kind of Unidynes are they? Are they silver pistol grips--like maybe a 545 perhaps? If so, they'll work well (and in some cases better than) in the same way a 57 would. I've used 'em on guitar cabs and snare with good results. And since a 57 can be serviceable on kick, the Unidynes could also...

AKG mics

Wilbur,

Which AKG mics? Some cheap AKG vocal mics are pretty good. (the one's I have) Some not as good. (the one's the other suckers got stuck with (Oops, I only know anything about the one's I have not the ones the other suckers got stuck with.))

Do the drums need to be stereo? Are you recording the drums at the same time as the other instruments? What other instruments?

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

The Unidynes say "Unidyne B" "Model 515SA" and they have an attached 1/4" cable...

Sorry, I've got no experience with that model--but try it out. I'd start with a guitar cab or snare and see how it compares to a known quantity, like a 57.
