how many of you fell asleep an emcee and woke up a producer?

i rarely write now. i started making beats so i had something to rhyme to.
now its like im writting rhymes to put with all my beats. :(

When it's my personal shit I'll write first and work the beat around it.

im having the same problem. i can write quick as hell and i do all the time...or at least used to...but it just seems like all i ever want to do is make beats. i'd say out of every 10 beats we make we actually make a song out of 1.

That's why I started selling them and sometimes even giving them away. When I first started making beats, I was making them like crazy and wasn't using them for my own lyrics. I kept getting approached to sell just by bumpin' em in the car when I was rollin' around. I mean, I sold one of my earlier ones (like about 6 months after I started making beats) for $400 just because the guy was trying to find a beat that he liked that didn't sound like the local Texas stuff (I think he was pushin' dope, but that's none of my biz).

its all a ratio...

I too fell into the trap of over-producing... but recently I began to force myself to write something to every new beat i make (at least the chorus) before moving on to the next one. That way I stay on track and always have fresh songs for people to hear. Plus my artists benefit from me handing them songs that are ready to go.
