elliot smith style vocal recordings?

if you bother to open your eyes, you'll see the case isn't closed.
 
You guys touched on most of this already, but...
It sounds like there's a fair bit of compression on there to bring up the real quiet ends of phrases as he trailed off. Maybe mic technique too, leaning right up to the mic as each line fades out to a whisper. You can hear quite a bit of sibilance, so he probably sang directly into the mic (instead of over it).
Also he's style of vocal doubling had alot to do with it in that he did NOT try to keep the double tight to the original. The discrepencies between the two really fill out the vocal, especially when he pans them hard left/right.

I love Elliot Smith by the way, either/or makes me happy and sad all at the same time. Why are all my favorite artists dead? :mad:

now, if you care to read the rest, you'll see what I mean about the case not being solved.
 
If you're recording to a program like Pro Tools or Adobe Audition, make several copies of your vocal track and paste them to new tracks, add a compressor fx to each and slight reverb and delay (to 2 of each) and pan two just off of center and two more farther than your farthest instrument pan.

Seriously. Why is this thread still going?

Stop admiring rock stars. They are nothing more than bums that won the lottery.
 
sing the same vocal take twice, pan them to opposite ends, add a desent amount of reverb and thats the basic sound. if the takes arent similar enough it doesnt give the same effect. singing the same take 3 times, panning 2 out and centering one also works. its not as complicated as some a re making it sound. its basically the poor mans way of creating a big sound
