Eliminating hum (i know its probably been asked 1000 times)

Ok guys Ive been browsing this site for a while and I thought I already knew how to eliminate hum but I guess not. My set up goes:

Dean VX guitar -> Danelectro CoolCat distortion pedal -> Marshall MG15DFX

I already thought about the electronic interference in my room so I tried it on my garage. I unplugged everything but my amp out there and turned off the flourescent lights. I still had the hum. Any suggestions?
 
1). make sure your gear isnt near any crt monitors (old computer monitors or tv's)
2).it could be that you have a ground loop so check that out

the quickest easiest way to eliminate a ground loop problem is to get a DI box with a ground lift switch and set it to "lift"

Is it a high pitched hum, like ground noise? Or is it more like a low level hum from the road or possibly utilities in or around the area like air conditioning, refrigerator, etc?

If it is a ground noise, and you do not have a DI box, or you are not able to isolate the issue.. I have on rare occasions been able to eliminate ground noise by using a "ground lift adapter" available from Home Depot or Lowes... It looks something like this (http://www.filmtools.com/grliadco41.html), and is a cheap and easy solution. Although, it's a band-aid for a wound that may been stitches in the future. Don't leave your gear plugged into it when it's not in use, or during lightning storms!

Um. Whats a ground loop and whats a DI box?
 
Direct injection box - do some googling and all will be revealed...
