Howdy. I new to drum recording, but I was wondering how realistic I could get an electric drum set to sound? Obviously I would want it to sound as close to acoustic as possible, but I simply dont know anything about this. I'm looking to spend about 500 on the set. Is that reasonable? Any suggestions?

as far as a realistic sound, i think it all depends on if you use a drum module's sounds or use software. bfd and dfhs sound more realistic than any module that i have ever heard. a friend of mine owned a roland kit that was around $5000 and the module sounded pretty cheesy.

for $500, i don't think you're gonna come up with much unless you go diy.

I've been using e-drums for a long time and have played accoustices for over 40 years.

Triggering samples can create some very realistic drums. Some modules are better than others, but you can get some very good snare and kick sounds out of modules. E toms are a little harder to get real sounding because the decay is harder to capture. E cymbals suck, and always will suck (to long of a decay and to many "harmonics" to sample accurately.

$500 doesn't by much - but you may be able to buy a couple of Pintech or Hart pads and a low cost used module (alesis D4, etc) to trigger some samples

look on ebay also for some nice used kits you can get a used Roland kit for around $500.00....

My wife just bought a Yamaha DTXplorer electric drum set, it was about $850.
But it is worth every penny, drums sound great (better than my old Yamaha DTXpress version 1 :( ).

It plays nice and has some nice features.
No I'm a guitar player so I cant say "Hey I know tons about drums", But I have play a few electrics and ton of acoustic drums and have to say for the money the DTXplorer is worth it. Plus it has a MIDI out for triggering sounds like the others posted above. :)

If you could save up a little while longer and get a DTX you would be very very happy I'm sure. I think it was $850 + tax so like $900 in the end but it included every thing except a Drum throne and sticks. Heck it even came with a kick pedal (a decent one too) all packed into one box. Most more expensive set dont come with one.

Just my two cents. :)
