I like it.
The open hi-hat is a little annoying, and I'd love to hear more like the bridge at 2:40 with the synth sounds.

Would be great with some metal vocals (is Phil Anselmo available?)
 
I agree about the hi hat. I'll probably go in today and change it up a bit. I did make some revisions last night because the part that's supposed to be the verse sounded kinda weak and out of place. So, I changed the beat there and the fill leading into it. I'll post the revision in a minute. Thanks for listening!

Just as a FYI, this was never supposed to be a full song. It started just as a test for my new software. It was just one drum beat and a couple of riffs. A day later... It was a song. I love Mixcraft!
 
Listening to the 1st Mix.
Overall it is a tad much in the highs, it sounds a bit too scooped in the low mids also.
I would lay off the high mids on the snare and guitar a tad. The kick is buried in the mix at times, if you can bring out the kick like you have done with the snare that would be good. Try cutting the low mids on the kick and boosting at around 5k and bringing the level up.

The low end tends to be a bit much at times, try using delicate EQ and compression to tighten up the low end so it doesn't whoomph at times. A multiband comp on the low end of the bass could help here.

What was your set up for the guitars?

Okay, I'll go through and fiddle with the EQ and see if I can get that kick to come out more. I do agree on the low end. I need to cut that a bit. I'll see what I can do later in the day.

As for my guitar, I'm using a Fernandes Vertigo Elite with an EMG-80 in the bridge. That's being run through a Digitech RP1000 with a custom 5150 II sound I made with a Mesa cab model and some room reverb. All the EQ for the guitar is being run through the RP1000.

I'm listening to the 2nd revision....

That's some killer guitar tone and chops. I don't really listen to metal but I still like. It's got a lot more atmosphere than most metal tunes. Yeah, for sure...like ambient/metal. I think I liked the effects you used the most, you lit up the ears pretty nice.

I'm not the person to ask about the mix, but I dig the song.
 
Hey, thanks a lot! I appreciate you taking the time to give it a listen. I worked on that guitar tone a lot. It's finally where I want it. And as for the atmosphere, it's something I strive to do. I want the song to be awesome even if there's no vocals or words. Thanks again.
 
Listening to number 3.
Too much highs still! Straight away you hear the hats sounding thin. Bring them down in the mix and take a little of the highs off the snare and hats please. It is by no means harsh, but the high end is making your mix sound thin.

The low end is much better now. The kick is still hidden at times. More 5k and try automating the volume of the kick.
I think you could still have a bit more meat in your mix, low end/low mids, but there may be enough if you tame the highs.

Look forward to a 4th revision? :D

I listened to the first and third mixes.

The thrid sounds better, but I think there's just too much crash (and too many crashes on the hats). I would highly recommend rewriting the drum part.

The guitars sound pretty good to me.

That synth part on the intro sounds a little wonky. At first, I thought I'd accidentally started two players at once and that they were interacting weirdly. It just seems glitchy and out of tempo, I'm afraid.

The other synths sound good though.
 
Thanks for the replies and the advice, guys! I went back in and redid some EQing and I think I took a better step in the right direction this time. It doesn't sound so boomy and thin. I edited my original post and added the new mix. Check it out and let me know if you think it's an improvement or a failure. Thanks!

Alright, I posted the new mix. I got rid of a lot of the highs and tightened things up a bit. Check it out. I edited the original post so that only the newest mix and the one previous is available. Thanks.
 
Sounding better. The hats still sound out. I would use a high shelf to cut the highs with a low Q (Wide bandwidth) rather than using a large Q.

As for the reverb, cut the highs from the reverb down to about 4k as you can really hear the unnatural reverb sound.

Good stuff, almost there.

Hey bud, great tone you got there. Man, I cannot get over the "gut" of your guitar tone. If you don't mind what are you using to process your sound? In terms of critique, not bad. One thing I strive for with programmed drums is trying to make them sound as "humanistic" as possible. It is hard. I use Logic's hyper editor and try to adjust velocity hits on every single note to give it that human error factor. While it takes time is does help with getting the robot sound out of it. However, listening to most metalcore albums, I know most of the producers are using triggering or resampling sounds. They have too, lol.

You sample sounds similar to something I would hear from StaticX. Please don't take that the wrong way. You still have a very unique sound nonetheless.

My guitar sound is coming straight from my Digitech RP1000. I made a custom patch which uses a Peavey 5150 II amp model with a 4x12 Mesa cab model. I am running all of my guitar EQ from the RP1000 and there is only a small amount of Lexicon Room reverb added from the unit. It's plugged directly to my computer via USB.

I only use a little bit of post EQing in Mixcraft with an iZotope plugin for some fine tuning. After that, I use a multiband compressor in Adobe Audition 3 on the whole mix to balance everything out.

And I use EZDrummer for my drums. I have the Humanizer all the way up but sometimes it's just not enough. But I can't play real drums and even if I could, I wouldn't be able to in this tiny apartment. Ha ha ha!

And I welcome the Static-X comment! The have been a big influence for me. As well as NIN, Manson, Stone Sour, newer Slipknot, and Bullet for my Valentine. All of that put together is what's going on in my head.
 
Unfortunately DFH2 EZX is one of the worst drum kits for ez drummer you can get. The cymbals lack, the drums lack it just lacks.

If your looking to improve the drum sounds, switch over to the new metal machine ezx.

Now the Mix in that video is a nice mix. Drums are believable and the guitars are great for only using an amp sim!
So no amp was used at all?
