I'm about to upgrade my no name kick dynamic to one of these two. I'm looking for a faithfull reproduction of the actual kick plus occasional use for male vocals. Mostly it'll be used to record low volume kick in old school jazz, folk & blues styles. Both'll do it as far as I can see and both have great reputations as kick mikes.

It'll not be possible to audition them together so I'm going to buy new blind. The Beyer can be had locally for about the same as the RE-20 shipped out of the US. Locally the RE-20 is stupidly priced.

I've pretty much decided that the RE-20 is the one for me but I wonder if anyone has opinions for or against either?

As an aside, I'm not considering any other option outside these two nor do I intend to.

:)

Sounds like you've made up your mind.I would go with the 88, but thats just me.

You will use the 88 for the rest of your life in many ways......course the re 20 is great too

Go with the M88 if you can swing it...I bought mine for $50 and its the best I have in my current cabinet for Bass drum...and I have an AT25...MD421...and an SM7...that M88 is my go to mic for bass drum...the big tom gets the AT25...and the snare gets the MD421...toms all get sm57s...all mics are decent on bass drum...but the M88 is the best I have.

The M88 is a great mic, but I never liked it on kick. A bit too natural for my tastes. I'd take a D112 instead.

For male vocals though, yeah.

The M88 has won out over the RE20 in the final decision. I'll pick it up on Thursday. Jolly good. :)

Excellent choice you'll never go wrong with it in your recordings. Try it on vocals to see how your like it there.

Well now, this M88 has made quite a difference even to my crappy kit in it's crappy room in the attic. Suddenly it's not hard any more. Imagine that, all kick drums mikes are not created equal. Who'd've thought such a thing. D'oh :o

Good recommendation work you lot and I'm glad I listened to it. :)

Just read your other post to you getting the K2 looks like your increasing your mic locker by leaps and bounds, good for you. And it makes it that much more fun having different go to mics right ?

I've said this a thousand times but this sure is an expense addition but one you'll never regret. .Have fun
