Argumentative...
When recording electric guitar do you need a mic on the amp you are using or do you plug guitar into amp, amp into interface?

Is either an option and what really would be the differences??

Most people like to mic the amp. Look on youtube for some examples of mic placement an speakers. Many people also use DI boxes and amp simulators with good success. i have used both and had success and failure with both. ;)

I've just recorded some guitar tracks for band using line in, guitar to marshall amp, the amp send/line out to the interface.
And for clean tone, actually it sounds quite good, a lot better than using POD or amp simulator.......sweet, warm and full
But for distortion, it sounds like crap....
IMO, the best distortion sound you can get is when you mic your amp.
POD or other amp simulator that I've tried still lack some "air" sound
