Electric Guitar mic/recording setup

Planning on rounding up my home recording setup with a dynamic mic to complement my MXLV69ME. Have a Mesa 2x12 cab and I'm thinking in close-mic'ing it with either a Sennheiser 906 or a Beyer M201. Don't personally like the (in)famous Shure SM57, too harsh for me. The V69ME will be placed a couple of feet away from the cab.

Acoustically treated room, will record mainly distorted guitar (metal) but some cleans and acoustics. Any comment/suggestion on what dynamic mic would be a better pick? Any other comment on mic placement?

Thanks.

You owe it to yourself to try one of the new budget ribbons from Nady/ShinyBox/Aphex etc. The one I own personally is the ShinyBox 46 and it sounds fabulous on clean and distorted guitar. Fatter and more flattering than a SM57.

+1 on the ribbon mic...I can't speak for the cheaper ones, but I haven't used an sm57 on an amp since I got the Royer 121.

You should try your Marshall AND the SM-57, both close mic'ed, at the same time.

You might be surprised what you get.
