Electret capsule question

In another thread, electret capsules are discussed. One of the mics mentioned is the AT3035. It was my understanding that electret capsules don't require phantom power and yet my AT3035's do. What's the story here?

Also, I noticed that the street prices for AT3035's aren't much different than AT4040's (>$100). Is the upgrade worth it or should I just keep on enjoying the 3035s? I record Acoustic guitar (classical to be specific) almost exclusively and so far I've been very happy with the 3035s but with all this talk, it's got me thinking and hey, Christmas IS coming! :D

Thanks, Steve Brown

The internal preamp requires phantom power to operate. The capsule is permanently charged.

They need power for the electronics. This is usually just a single cell battery (1.5v) and sometimes a PP3 (9v) or siimilar. Most High Quality electrets use phantom power which sometimes also gives greater headroom.
